"What we need to do is always lean into the future; when the world changes around you and when it changes against you - what used to be a tail wind is now a head wind - you have to lean into that and figure out what to do because complaining isn't a strategy." - Jeff Bezos
Radiology is being disrupted. A collection of startups (and bigger companies as well) are attempting to use AI to read exams. Reimbursement continues to get cut. Payment is getting more complicated. Competition is increasing. Etc... etc... But remember, complaining isn't a strategy.
Now is the time for Radiology leadership to "Lean In". Make yourselves more efficient. Embrace AI to OPTIMIZE its impact in Radiology. Invest in technology and partner with industry. Innovate new methods to increase customer service without slowing down your practice. Add more value.
If you wish to win in today's environment, software and information technology can help a lot. Here are some things that are helping practices thrive.
-- Eliminate the time you spend looking at the worklist
-- Move non-reading tasks to an operations team
-- Move to more structured reports
-- Measure the quality of your reports constantly
-- Track every exam and take action if it is not read fast enough
-- Optimize staffing
-- Exploit economy of scale
-- Distribute exams to readers that are faster and better at reading that type of exam
-- Partner with AI vendors, but control how it changes your workflow
I will end this blog with another Bezos quote.
"There are two kinds of companies, those that work to try to charge more, and those that work to charge less. We will be the second"
In 2017, the successful radiology practices will lean into the headwinds and work to charge less. Success will come naturally to these practices.
